Finding the right coach means looking for training, relevant experience and a connection that works for you. Here's what to look for.
1. Real training
Anyone can call themselves a coach, so training matters. Look for coaches trained through an ICF-accredited program or another recognized coach training school. ICF credentials (ACC, PCC and MCC) show a coach has completed training hours, logged coaching experience and passed an assessment.
2. A focus that matches your goal
A leadership coach and a wellness coach bring different strengths. Check their coaching areas and bio for experience with situations like yours.
3. Ethics and confidentiality
A good coach follows a code of ethics, keeps your conversations confidential, and tells you if what you need is outside coaching.
4. Chemistry
This is the one people underestimate. You should feel comfortable, heard and gently challenged. Trust your gut after a first conversation.
5. A clear way of working
Ask how sessions run, how often you'd meet, and how they'll help you track progress.
Good questions to ask
- What kind of clients do you most enjoy working with?
- What does a typical session look like?
- How will we know coaching is working?
- What's your training and credential?
