What's the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching vs. therapy: what's the difference?

Coaching and therapy both involve a trained professional, a confidential conversation and real personal growth. But they aren't the same thing, and knowing the difference helps you get the right support.

Therapy looks at healing

Therapy is delivered by licensed mental health professionals such as psychologists, counsellors and clinical social workers. It can diagnose and treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and trauma. It often explores the past to understand how it shapes the present.

Coaching looks forward

Coaching is a partnership focused on goals, growth and action. A coach helps you clarify what you want, find your strengths, work through obstacles and follow through. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) describes coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

A simple way to think about it

  • Therapy often asks: What's hurting, and how can we heal it?
  • Coaching often asks: Where do you want to go, and what will get you there?

When to choose which

Coaching is a great fit if you're generally well and want to grow your career, leadership, confidence, wellbeing habits or life direction. If you're struggling with your mental health, coping with trauma, or finding it hard to manage daily life, a licensed therapist is the right place to start.

Many people benefit from both at different times, or even at the same time. Ethical coaches will refer you to a therapist if a conversation moves beyond coaching.

If you're in crisis, please contact your local emergency number or a crisis line right away.
