Coaching is a conversation with a purpose. A trained coach partners with you to help you get clear on what you want, uncover what's in the way, and take steps toward it.
What a coach actually does
A coach listens closely, asks thoughtful questions, and reflects back what they notice. They help you:
- Get clear on your goals and values
- See your situation from new angles
- Make decisions and commit to action
The answers come from you. The coach's job is to help you find them, and to hold you to what you said you'd do.
Common types of coaching
- Leadership and executive coaching: leading teams, influence and big decisions
- Career coaching: changing jobs, promotions, finding direction
- Life and personal development coaching: confidence, relationships, purpose
- Wellness coaching: habits, energy, stress and balance
What coaching isn't
Coaching isn't therapy, consulting or mentoring. It doesn't diagnose or treat mental health conditions, and a coach usually won't hand you a ready-made solution. Read more in .
Why ICF training matters
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) sets global standards for coach training and ethics. Every coach in Laven has completed coach training, so you can relax into the conversation.
